Gun Control in America
Gun control is always a hot topic in the US, especially in the wake of deadly shootings such as Las Vegas, Orlando, and Sandy Hook. The 2nd Amendment to The Constitution protects the right to bear arms in the US, though there have been arguments that the 2nd Amendment is out of date, and does not protect the citizenry. I am here to quell that sentiment.
For decades, the Democratic Party has tried to enact gun control measures that greatly limit American's abilities to bear arms. From the Federal Assault Weapons Ban that expired in 2004 to the Washington D.C. handgun ban that was struck down by the Supreme Court as unconstitutional, Democrats have attempted, largely unsuccessfully, to limit the power of the 2nd Amendment. These attempts have been redoubled after each major mass shooting. However, the Democrats have failed to recognize that gun control will not work in the US as well as it has in the proclaimed gun-free utopias of Japan and Australia. Instead that they think that every thinks just like Judy Brady, having made similar claims of "My god, who wouldn't love [gun control]" (Brady 541).
Expansive gun control would not limit gun violence for one simple reason: there are already about 300 million firearms legally owned in the US. Universal gun bans work well in Japan and Australia because there was not already hundreds of millions of guns in the population. Gun control will do nothing but take guns out of the hands of citizens wishing only to protect themselves and make it easier for criminals to murder, rob, loot, and rape. If a person wishes to commit a crime with a gun, gun control laws will not stop them from obtaining that gun. They will only obtain that firearm from the massive pool of guns already in the populace that the government has no ability to regulate. The only way to stop this criminal is with a well armed population that is ready to stop him or her. The only person that can stop a bad guy with a gun is a good guy with a gun, and the police often cannot get to the scene of the crime fast enough to save lives.

I'm unsure what this is supposed to reflect. It sounds like it's supposed to be satire, but it's more of an argument for gun control than anything. You aren't really creating irony or mock the attempts at instituting gun control. It's a good argument nonetheless.
ReplyDeleteI never really thought of gun control that way. 300 million? More than I think anyone could've imagine. Actually pretty scary to think about. Anyway I enjoyed reading your argument on gun controls. Although it wasn't satire you bring up a good topic that is merely inescapable yet needs to be addressed.
